Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast – In this post, I want to look at the best dog-friendly destinations in the West ~ focusing on California and Oregon, two states where you can easily travel with your pet (I know because I travel here all the time)! In these states, I like to find places that go beyond dog-friendly: that means big dog parks or dog-friendly beaches, great pet-friendly hotels, and a laid-back city atmosphere where you can easily bring your pet on adventures. . I found some great places like Bend, Oregon and Carmel, California… to name a few. Join me and my dog Dylan on our quest for “the best dog destination on the West Coast!”

I love Cannon Beach for many reasons: charming town, dozens of great restaurants, coffee (Sleepy Monk!!), tons of great pet-friendly hotels, and of course, 100% pet-friendly beaches. No belt needed here! Oregon is much more lenient than California in this regard. The view of Haystack Rock will mesmerize you, especially at sunset. Walk your dog along Ocean Avenue, enjoy a bowl of soup on one of the many outdoor patios, and be sure to stop by the adorable pet store nearby: Puppy Love by the Sea.

*** My pick for best pet-friendly hotel in Cannon Beach: tied with Ocean Inn and Surf Sand Resort. Both are luxury beachfront hotels that are very pet-friendly. The rooms at Ocean Lodge are bigger and have better views ~ but Surfsand is closer to town and Haystack Rock, the rooms are more comfortable, and their Wayfarer restaurant is my favorite place in town (and has room service)…
Bend is my current home in the United States, and frankly, I don’t think I’ve ever lived in a more pet-friendly place. The number of dog parks in Bend alone exceeds those in California, and nearly every restaurant in town with a patio is dog-friendly, including: St. Francis School in McMenamin (home of a bar, brewery, movie theater, concert venue, cigar bar and hotel all in a former Catholic school), Naked Winery, Avid Cider, Crux Brewing, 10 Barrel… and the list goes on. .. & HE…

*** My pick for the best pet-friendly hotel in Bend: Tetherow Golf Resort. At Tetherow, you can enjoy luxurious accommodations with stunning mountain views in a golf resort just 5 minutes’ drive from downtown Bend and the popular Old Mill District. This is the most pet-friendly place in town. Or head to Sunriver Resort, about 20 minutes south of Bend: one of the best family resorts in the country.

Carmel’s Main Beach is my favorite off-leash dog-friendly beach in the world: The legendary Pebble Beach is on the right, and if you follow the crescent moon to the left, you’ll find cypress trees framing your view, a variety of -million-dollar homes …from cute cottage to edgy and modern. There’s a reason Clint Eastwood lives here: There’s something special about Carmel.
This town loves dogs: they’re welcome almost everywhere ~ but I especially love the cozy outdoor patio at Forge in the Forest, which has a menu specifically for dogs…
Carmel is not the only place in Monterey Bay with amazing ocean views: Go to Pacific Grove and walk along the beach to enjoy views like this…
***My top pick for pet friendly hotels in Carmel: Pebble Beach Inn. Yes, expensive~ but according to my parents and the helpful waiter: pets are allowed here in every room! You can bring dogs of any size. For a less expensive option in Carmel, try the pup-friendly Cypress Inn in Doris Day.

I grew up in Orange County and last week I met friends at Pacific City, the new outdoor mall in Huntington Beach. When I came home for Christmas, I brought Dylan with me ~ which meant I had to take him to the mall with me… OMG I was surprised at how pet friendly he is! The luxury boutique invited us in, joined us for coffee and we all had lunch on Simmzy’s terrace overlooking the harbor and sea. I would return without hesitation! There’s another reason to visit Huntington with your dog: It’s the only dog-friendly beach in Orange County.
*** My top pick for a pet-friendly hotel in Huntington Beach: Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach. Kimptons is super trendy and always dog friendly… they even offer a happy hour for dogs! The hotel is also very romantic, with an ocean view that complements the pale blue color palette ~ and you’re only a block from the marina, Main Street and the ocean. Huntington’s Dog Beach is just a few miles north…
San Diego has two off-leash dog beaches, and both are in upscale areas: Del Mar and Coronado. Last year, Dylan and I tested Del Mar Dog Beach south of Encinitas. It’s not as big as Carmel Beach, but it’s still great. Happy dogs run in and out of the water, people are relaxed and friendly and parking is easy, on the same street as the beach entrance. Coronado’s Dog Beach offers pristine white sand and is located not far from the pet-friendly historic Hotel Del Coronado.
Coronado Dog Beach is one of the best places in Southern California to play in the sand with your pup.

***My picks for pet-friendly hotels in San Diego: San Diego is huge, so it depends on where you want to go. For North County, try the upscale L’Auberge Del Mar, where two dogs of any size are welcome. If you’re in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, check out the modern Hotel Indigo and its stylish rooftop bar. If you want to be close to Coronado’s legendary dog beach, stay at Hotel Coronado, which has three pet-friendly restaurants! (Del only allows dogs under 40 pounds…)

Rest assured: I’ve visited every attraction on this list over the past year, so my recommendations are current and relevant for 2020 and beyond!
Since 2010, I’ve been doing an annual road trip between California and Oregon with Dylan ~ so all of these places are places I’ve actually visited and look forward to going back to every year. Seattle, Washington’s largest city, is very dog-friendly and has a variety of wonderful parks, pubs and restaurants. Some of the city’s green spaces have off-the-chain areas, including Magnuson Park, Golden Garden Park, and Denny’s Park. City pups and their owners can also enjoy world-class art in the outdoor Olympic Sculpture Park. The 9-acre park is located on the shores of Elliott Bay and features monumental works of art.
