There are two bedrooms – one sleeps four and the other sleeps two. We stayed in the Sandpiper which sleeps four. Each room has its own garden and facilities, but there is a door between the two if you want to rent both together.

It’s not a problem for us now, but when the kids were little, a walled garden was a dream for us. It’s always a relief to be able to sit outside and know the kids aren’t walking into the street. As a parent of now grown children I still appreciate this private space and it’s lovely to sit outside in our own space with views of the beach and Dunstanburgh Castle in the distance.
A hot tub is high on many people’s lists when booking a short break and Shepherd’s Retreat really delivers on that. Designed to accommodate two people, this hot tub heats up with a nearby stove. It takes about 90 minutes to raise the temperature, but once it’s done, you only need to leave the light on for 30 minutes while you raise the temperature during recess. This bath is the hottest bath I have ever been in. It’s a treat and I think heating it up with the wood stove itself adds to the experience and flavor of the whole thing. We had a routine where the kids would bathe in the afternoon and Steve and I would stay up until sunset. It was beautiful.
Bednell is a beautiful place and the beach here really reminds me of parts of Cornwall. The beach is dog friendly and you can try kayaking, kite surfing, hiking or many other water sports here. Instruction and equipment can be rented directly on the beach.
We laughed so hard that one family on a sea kayak tour – the kids jumped right in and left their parents to start a fight. They must have been knocked about 10 times, but it was good for them and good for their efforts. And they hang broken! There is also a nice little restaurant on the beach (see their Facebook page here).

Bait in Bednell really feels like a local and they serve seafood at reasonable prices. I will try to go there with Stew’s because their pies and fries are divine! There are also many activities like beach yoga. The people who live here are truly my dream life. Bednell is also home to the Christer Arms, one of my favorite pubs.
Seahouse and Bamburgh are all within 5 miles and are definitely worth a visit. I recommend a boat trip with relaxing tours so you don’t miss Bamburgh Castle and the beach.

When we make a fire, we don’t make a fire because, according to the children, this fire is not good. There are many options, from indoor and outdoor fireplaces to large barbecues and pizza ovens. Back to basics in the best way. I overdid it on the marshmallows though!

Getting a digital detox is all well and good, and we spent quite a bit of time with our phones during our time at Shepherd’s Retreats. The kids play in the garden, we spend time in the greenhouse and around the fire, make marshmallows/bake, we play games (not our favorite) and read books, but we have the opportunity to connect with people and Use our Instagram. There is also a USB charger (bring a car adapter) and Wi-Fi. Harry is happy that he can still watch his YouTube videos and listen to his podcasts as he enjoys his hot chocolate before bed. When you’re traveling with teenagers and adults it’s all about compromise, I guess I’m not mad at Harry for being on his phone when he’s involved with us in other ways. to be It helps make the holiday less ‘stuffy’ and as I always say, it’s the kids’ holiday too and if they want phone time why not. It’s all about balance and it’s great to have options.
Above the king’s bed is a starry sky. I’ve never been anywhere with this one and I think that’s the USP. It was relaxing to lie in bed and watch the clouds fly across the sky. When was the last time you looked at the clouds? i don’t remember I tell Steve every weekend that I feel better. In the evening, when we turn off the lights, it’s so beautiful that all the stars shine above. There are curtains if you’re worried about a fire the next morning, but we didn’t use them and it was fine.
I love that shepherd retreats are dog friendly. The area is fantastic for dog walking and all the beaches are dog friendly too. Dogs are allowed at nearby Bamburgh Castle and many pubs/restaurants are dog friendly (you can read about dog friendly pubs and restaurants here).

Dogs get a VIP welcome with homemade dog treats in the welcome bag, a rope in the garden to clean up the rock paper, a dog towel, food and water bowls. As a non-dog owner, you wouldn’t say it’s a dog-friendly place, and there’s no sign of dogs staying here. Definitely the best of both worlds!
The houses were built by local craftsmen from Hexham using recycled materials. I love that our cottage grounds are part of the Rex Hotel in Whitley Bay.
