Day Trips With Dogs Southern California

We’re on a mission to find the best off-leash dog beaches in Southern California, but surprisingly, the options are pretty limited. There are many leashes on the beaches, but my dog is free and loves to go out in the water, so the beach is off-leash.

Dog Friendly Spots In Yosemite (best Hiking & Hotels) — Flying Dawn Marie

We’ve spent the past few months scouring all of Southern California’s off-leash dog beaches and listed them as our least favorite.

Huntington Dog Beach was definitely my favorite off-leash dog beach in Southern California. If I lived nearby, I would come here every weekend. The dog beach area is clearly marked and we arrived a little before noon so we had no trouble finding parking.

Its length, cleanliness and shallow water provided the perfect environment for our chicks. Zooey was having so much fun getting in and out of the water by herself for the first time.

A wonderful non-profit organization manages this beach and does a great job of keeping it “off-leash” so our pups can run and play freely.

Dog Friendly Hotels Santa Monica

We were staying at the Hilton Beachfront Resort in Santa Barbara and a friend recommended we visit Hendry Beach. I really liked the crystal scene here.

The dramatic cliffs were stunning and there was plenty of beach space for everyone to enjoy. The lead area begins to the east and there are clear signs to point you in the right direction.

Here we found a beautiful restaurant overlooking Arroyo Burro Beach. But dogs are not allowed. Don’t worry, there are plenty of other dog-friendly options near Santa Barbara.

Then we visited the beach for the first time and loosened it from the end. For some reason, this dog beach is always listed in the Southern California area. However, Carmel is part of Northern California and is much closer to San Francisco than Los Angeles.

We decided to include Carmel-by-the-Sea on our list because it is a dog paradise and has been voted the #1 dog-friendly city in America.

We were staying at a nearby dog friendly hotel and decided to walk to Carmel Beach as parking is very tight. The scenery here was amazing and the powdery white sand felt so good on my feet.

The bears especially loved the sand here and were very excited when their little hands touched the sand. We think that white sand is reminiscent of Florida.

Discover The Best Dog Friendly Campgrounds In Northern California

This is the most dog-friendly beach we visited. I arrived around 9am and was surprised to see the parking lot full and a line forming.

Luckily we were able to get a seat. Patience was the key as people always seemed to return to their cars and leave.

Packed with many beaches, including surfers, beach volleyball players and dog owners, and although the parking lot was large, it was full.

The dog section is very large and the water is shallow so my pup can go in and enjoy the waves. There are also large rocks here, so the place is recommended for dogs who want to jump on the rocks.

Dog Boarding, Day Care, Grooming

Zooey loves to jump and climb rocks so we had a lot of fun here. The bear had a great time climbing the rocks, trying to outrun Zooey, and chasing the other dogs.

We did a picnic on Long Beach and Rosie’s Dog Beach which was a super friendly hotel just a few miles away.

When she first started going on the leash around Los Angeles, Rosie Beach always topped search results. It is currently the only legal off-leash dog beach in Los Angeles County.

When we visited around 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning, there was plenty of parking and plenty of room for chickens to run around. But these chicks are not too keen on this beach.

Dog Friendly Backpacking Trips In The Sierras

There were no particular problems and it was clean, but it was a little old. The sand near the water was also muddy, and I saw the dog’s feet and legs very muddy every time he went in and out of the water.

Again, the dog wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t exciting for us or our dog like it was at other beaches.

It is our least favorite for several reasons. First, there was no parking in the area, so the only option was to find street parking in the neighborhood.

Access to the dog beach section is quite a long walk and when you finally arrive, the place is small.

Best Dog Friendly Days Out Around Brisbane

Additionally, behind you is a long barbed wire fence protecting the US naval base. From the car to the long walk to the beach, it seems that enough effort ends up with a moderate view and space.

Many of our friends love this beach and highly recommend it. You may have a better experience if you live in the area or visit on a less crowded day.

We hope our review helps you plan your and your pup’s off-leash dog beach adventures.
