Ridgeway Log Cabin
In November 2019 we took Winnie, our 2 year old chocolate labrador, on her first vacation. We had previously chosen a woodland holiday as we had previously stayed at Sherwood Pines where they lived, so we knew they were dog friendly – but this was Winnie’s first time in a familiar environment so we opted for somewhere a little closer to home: the forest. Dean
With a little light searching we found tons of hikers to try in the woods about 15 minutes away (although you can hike any of the trails here if you stay in the woods from the cabin!).
Our previous jungle vacation was for our honeymoon so we peaked in the Golden Oak cabin, but this time we wanted somewhere comfortable but didn’t need a high-end cabin, so we opted for the Silver Oak. The cabin still has a hot tub but no wood burner and no extra towels for hot tub use – but the cabin sleeps 4 so we used the spare room towels.
We were able to book the holiday when there was a discount code in the January sale so Vinny didn’t have to spend extra (dogs are normally £15 per dog). When looking for cabinets on the website, make sure they are advertised as “pet friendly” and you will be shown cabinets that are not pet friendly. We chose a weekend (Monday-Friday).
Golden Oak Treehouse
At the end of the holiday we decided to take Vinny for a wildlife experience at the Cotswold Wildlife Park – as we were closer than we would have been if we had driven from home.
We arrived at our warm and cozy log cabin for check out at 4pm (they offered to check out early for an extra charge, but since we still had 2 hours at the cabin, we decided against it).
When we arrived, we took Vinny to his cabin before unloading the car – he was so excited and smelling the new environment that he led our exploration!
The terrace area is fenced and divided into 2 areas – the upper level has table and chairs and a passive BBQ area, while the lower level is enclosed as a hot tub. The hot tub section has a second entrance for the staff to access the hot tub for daily checks, but ours was not fully closed until I checked, so make sure it’s properly bolted before allowing the dogs to explore. (in action!)

The Forest Holidays team have kindly left Winnie with a large bean bag and two collapsible duffle bags! .
Note: You can put the poop in a brown box outside the cabin, or take it to one of the many dog litter bins around the site for disposal – we’ll collect it for a day or two and then pick it up. . There is a trash can when we leave our adventure
Winnie didn’t like being in the hot tub away from us the first night, but some yogurt mixed with fruit for a toy snake and a can of sardines settled him the next night.
When we came to bathe Winnie, we made sure we came to bathe.
Forest Of Dean District Cabin Vacation Rentals
Lots of new noises at night (mainly chicken eggs and goats) meant Winnie didn’t sleep well and I was very tired. The bed was a twin instead of our usual super king, which meant Vinny was very uncomfortable as he usually spread out with us in our king size bed.
Winnie has a little trouble adjusting to the polished wooden floor, so she’s a little nervous on the couch and bed because of the slippage.
However, we woke up to a nice dry day and decided to take our first full day hike
Forest Vacations are self-catering, however, there is an on-site kitchen (located in the Forest of Dean reception building) that serves breakfast/lunch/dinner, and hot meals can be delivered to your cabin!

We went to Beckenhorst Lodge to try the Sculpture Trail – the whole trail is about 4.5 miles (if you stick to it) and we only covered 6 miles in about 3 hours as we had to double up. Go to the “field” in several places and guide Winnie with his nose through the deep mud!
The fall colors were amazing! Most of the trails are gravel, so it’s reasonably accessible, but due to the time of year, some sections were deep mud – so I’d double-check if you have mobility or plan to use a motorbike. Try this trail a few days after the last rain Some trails intersect with cycle paths, so be careful
