If you love your dog and love to be active and outdoors, hiking with your dog is as good as it gets. As summer rolls in, you’re as likely to encounter a four-legged companion on the road as anyone else.
My husband and I live in a dense urban area and we take full advantage of the Olmsted-designed neighborhood park. But there’s nothing better than our three-year-old Great Pyrenees mix, born to hike, stretch their legs and get out into the countryside. So we recently went to a nearby state park to check out an abandoned amusement park (which was so cute!).

It takes a 6 mile steep hill both downhill and uphill to the old park and back. Well, it was a monster for these two. Our dog Cash is happily tied up and down. But the next day? Neither of us was happy when he limped on our morning walk. Since my first job as a dog mom is to keep him healthy and safe, I was horrified to learn from the vet that he had dislocated his shoulder. My poor child, who only roams the flat city streets and kindergarten, was less used to steep slopes than we were and paid the price.
This is not unusual, I realized as I talked to dog owners and heard stories of dogs who were too tired or unable to catch up. Determined to prepare for the next time I’m out, I turned to some experts for tips to use when walking the dogs. Massachusetts dog trainer Mary Simon founded Dog Outdoors Adventures and has taken dozens of dogs on her tours. Dog parent and veterinarian David Wohlstadter of BluePearl Pet Hospital in New York is an avid traveler.
So what do you need to know before you hit the road? Know your dog and know how good it is for you. The most important things to consider, Dr. Their age, fitness level, including weight, “and their breed plays a role,” Wohlstadter said, “because some … like bulldogs, those guys are more susceptible to heat.” It’s not just a concern about heat exhaustion and heatstroke, but breeds that “have a hooded face,” Simon said, like pugs and boxers, “can suffocate in hot temperatures.”
However, if they’ve been running the AC all summer, they’ll need time to get used to the heat (like us), so your first visit shouldn’t be a full day. Move up for long walks. People need 7 to 14 days to adjust to the heat, said Dr. Wohlstadter, so bring Fido while you work on your heat tolerance!

The biggest decision is whether your dog should be a walker or a walker. Depending on the terrain, it can sometimes be difficult to have, Simon said. But, and this is a big but, your dog has to have a strong memory before you can even dream of giving it up (and of course even if dogs are allowed in the area you’re visiting, go).
What does it mean? Come and say come, no matter what the dog is doing or how tempting the distraction is. Simon said: “A dog can remember well at home or in the neighborhood but it’s completely different when they’re out and about, so people need to make sure they train when there’s a high level of distraction.” Also remember that if you walk with friends and dogs, they may behave differently. If someone leaves, the first can follow.
You should have full control of the leash so you can keep your dog away from plants and animals that shouldn’t be disturbed (a good rule of thumb, Simon says, is that people shouldn’t chase them and dogs shouldn’t stop them Chase the animals you want your dog shall eat is an endangered species.
Of course, all accidents don’t care if the dog is on or off. “Scores are a big deal,” said Dr. Volstadter. “A lot of ticks are just sitting there with their legs out on the edge of the green waiting to be caught.” shaking!
Hiking With Dogs: How To Hike Safely And Considerately
To prevent infestations, “talk to your vet about the best flea and tick products based on their health history,” says Dr. Wohlstadter. No solution is one-size-fits-all and all come with risks. “I personally use two types of tick prevention when I go to New York,” he said.
Although there is a barrier that can cause ticks to die and fall off, always check your dog when you are outside. “Get on schedule, that’s the most important thing,” said Dr. Volstadter. He recommends starting at the nose and working backwards, always following the same steps so you don’t miss any parts. The feeling under the hair, he noticed. Simon suggested carrying a pair of tweezers to pull them out if necessary.
Another danger is foxtail, a prickly weed with stinging seeds that can penetrate fur. They can get into soft pillows or the dog’s nose, says Simon. “There are up to six reports of their migration. These are amazing so it’s something you should check out.” If your dog licks its paws, sniffs or shakes its head, it could be a sign that it has foxtail.
So how much water do you need when you go out? “It is difficult,” said the doctor. Wohlstadter, because it depends on the size of the dog and the level of fitness, temperature and humidity. But one thing is for sure, they need water, and they need a lot of it. So if you’re going on a very long trip, pack enough water, he advises
