There are luxury resorts like the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, value hotels like All Star Resorts, and dozens of places in between.
But did you know that there is also a hotel within a hotel where you can leave your pets on holiday?

Disney World has always provided basic pet care. In 1971, a kennel opened at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, and Disney later added additional kennels to each of the four theme parks.
But in the early 2000s, Disney was ready to outsource the project. Best Friends Pet Care purchased Disney Kennels in 2008 and later opened its own facility on Disney property in Lake Buena Vista, Florida in 2010.
Now, Best Friends Pet Hotel is a one stop shop for boarding, grooming and other services on Disney properties.
Insider spoke with Best Friends Pet Hotel co-owners Ray Clennell and Leo Reynoso about the hotel, the animals they care for and the services they provide.

Clennell worked at Best Friends Pet Care for 10 years, while Reynoso worked for the company for 16 years.
“In the past, you’d drop off your dog and we’d take care of him with walks, food and water, but there were no extra activities — nothing to beautify or enhance his stay,” Reynoso said of Disney’s previous kennels.
But the current hotel, he said, has plenty of amenities and activities. You can send your pup to Doggy Day Camp, arrange cat sitting, pet sitting and more.

Dog & Cat Boarding, Day Care, And Veterinary Care
It was a “slow day” at the hotel when Insider spoke to Clennell and Reynoso. However, there were more than 100 animals in the facility.
“We have 110 pets at the end of the day, so it’s very slow for us,” Clennell said.
Reynoso noted that about 20 of those reservations were made by people who moved from Tampa, Fla., ahead of Hurricane Idalia.
“We’re also a hurricane shelter, so this time of year when we’re concerned about a storm, we can handle that and double our passenger numbers,” he said.

Those pets often include rabbits, gliders, rodents, “a lot of birds” and turtles, Reynoso said. In some cases they were also asked to take care of betta fish.
“We have a turtle that comes to us seven times a year called Mr. Bubbles,” Reynoso said. “That’s great.”
Pot-bellied pigs are at the facility “all the time,” Reynoso said, and ducks are another frequent visitor.
“We have a lady who brings us five of her ducks every year,” Clennell said. “They actually take over one of the club rooms and lay all over the place.”
Pet Friendly Vacations
The hotel staff can handle all non-venomous animals, except primates,” Reynoso said. Exotic animals, however, ask to be kept “always.”
“We got tarantulas and hissing cockroaches – crazy, crazy stuff,” he said. “And we just got a call from someone saying we have to evacuate during the hurricane and take the zebra with us.”
“Sometimes people try to sneak these pets into the parks with them,” Reynoso said. “So we finally got a call from Disney saying, ‘Hey, this lady was just trying to get her baby kangaroo to Animal Kingdom.’ Can you take him all day?’ And that’s how we sometimes end up with them.
In terms of accommodation, dogs can stay in one of five places, the smallest and cheapest being a completely private room.

“It’s the pinnacle of what you’re going to get,” Reynoso said. “But they all come with activities. It just depends on what level you want your pet to participate in while you’re on vacation with you.”
A two-level table costs $34 per night, while a four-level table costs $46 per night.
You can also add a $5 toy, $8 luxury cat bed, or $12 playtime between the cat and the staff.
“It just depends on the habitat the owners bring us,” Reynoso said. “We don’t have any specific data. We just need to know how big the habitat is.”

It costs $16 to house a small pet, $20 for a medium animal, $25 for a large animal, and $28 for very large animals.
Although the center is located on Disney World property, you do not need to visit the theme park to leave your pet there.
“A common misconception is that we’re just for Disney,” Reynoso said. “But you don’t have to be on a Disney property to use us for maintenance or other services. We’re on a Disney property and we’re sponsored by Disney, so to speak, but we see people going to Busch Gardens in Tampa or Universal in Orlando .
However, if you visit Disney World, you will find that the hotel hours are exactly the same as the theme park hours.

“We’re open with garden hours,” Clennel said. “So we open an hour before the opening of the first park and close an hour after the closing of the last park. Employees are also here 24 hours a day.”

“Everyone here is considered a Florida local,” Reynoso said. “We have people from Miami and Jacksonville who bring their dogs. Disney Cruise Line is also an hour and a half away. So people who go not just on Disney cruises, but on any cruise, leave their pets here .”
“We have people from Canada coming down from the snowbirds,” he continued. “I mean, we have people here from all over the world.”

But most importantly, according to Clennell and Reynoso, Best Friends Pet Hotel is flexible and willing to go the extra mile to care for your pet.
“If Fluffy needs his meal cut into small pieces, reheated at five o’clock and spooned, we can do that,” Clennell said.
