We hiked to Marquette, Michigan which was a great day trip out of town for the dogs. It’s a perfect combination of elevation, plains and on a clear day you can enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Superior.
There are several hills and mountain bike trails here, so make sure you know the weather and stick to the Hogback Trail. The final push can be a bit steep and bumpy. I pushed Cotopaxi a few times and lifted him to the top when I needed to.
If rocky terrain isn’t your thing, consider the nearby 4,000 Mile Northern Trail and National Scenic Byway. She went to Lakanamland sculpture and amusement park. Or try the mirror on the large lake and the many channels that fall into the water. You can’t go wrong if you decide to attend Marquette University this summer. The whole city is super dog friendly!
A Look At Greater Lansing’s And Michigan’s Dog Friendly Summer Spots
Grand Island is located near Munising Beach on Lake Superior. A 10-minute boat ride takes you and your dog to the island. You can walk around the whole island or around it. We lived in an old house in a national park. During the day there are many tourists, but if you get the chance to spend the night, you will be one of the few on the large and peaceful island. Our dogs never objected and the boat swam fast! We brought our bikes and luggage with us as the house is two miles from the marina. Everything comes packed and unpacked so it’s easy to store, but keep the essentials with you!
Green Point Dunes is located on the popular M-22 near downtown Frankfurt. Beautiful views of Lake Michigan, dog-friendly trails, and enough stairs to break a sweat on a hot summer day.

This trail is in the national forest not far from our accommodation in Interloken. These are trailers and apartments when we travel in the summer. As a result, it was a walking trail for us. Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth the effort if you’re not close to Interlochen. But if it is, that’s great! Traffic is light and the 6.5 mile loop with flat inclines is perfect for running.
Cotopaxi found his childhood footprint at Lost Lake and I will never forget his high energy here!
This is a quieter option than the popular Dune Trail at Sleeping Bear. This has some of the best views of Lake Michigan I’ve seen in my two summers in Michigan. The courses are available in a variety of lengths and difficulty levels, so be sure to picture the stunning blue color in your mind when you see it. Looking back on these roads and photos, I am so thankful that we spent time in Northern Michigan. I went through (I hope) one of the most difficult family experiences this summer. Cotopaxi and these roads brought my partner and I to this. As expected from Happy People Hiking, our well-being comes first. He encouraged us to walk our dogs every day in northern Michigan to keep them healthy. So it’s not just a walk with the best dog. Walking is a tool for dancing in the thunder and coming out of the storm healthy. We succeeded and I want everyone who is going through a difficult period to know that.
