Good Dog Vacation – You have no idea how excited I am to meet Wakasa for my last post. It’s summertime, which means more vacations. I’ve even been to Korea, Maine, and New York. The only downside of all? I don’t see my son every day. He was in good hands, but I love him so much it’s hard, so I’m planning a dog vacation with him!
Most hotels don’t allow pets, so I was thrilled to find Wakasa. They are a full-service vacation rental company with over 13,000 properties in 30 states and 16 countries, so there are plenty to choose from. I’m currently split between Savannah, GA and Kissimmee, FL, but since I’ve only been to Georgia once, I’m learning about the former. What do you think?

Now, this has nothing to do with car rides, but what I want to share is important to me. Before you start – haha, take it – take it to your dog, find pet ERs first. God forbid something happens to your child, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. I always make sure I have information to call the nearest clinic in case of an emergency, and I encourage you to do the same.
On a lighter note, Vacasa sent me a box of summer travel essentials and I wanted to show off my new treat. Here’s what I got: new baseball cap, travel book + pen, reusable straw (!!!!!) and new water bottle, luggage tags and laptop bag. I was excited… but I think Daisy was more excited than me.

While many choose to find dog-friendly hotels and plan their trips so they can bring their pups, this isn’t always an option for some families. That’s why the Pets a Go Go team has shared their top tips for making sure your pet is well looked after while you’re on vacation, because you deserve a stress-free trip.
Have a maintenance plan. Before booking travel, make sure your chosen pet sitter is available during your absence. Once this is determined, invite the person to your home before you leave to learn more about your dog’s daily behavior and build trust between your baby and the pet sitter. Seeing a familiar face when you’re not around helps the dog get used to not being with you. Write a list of your pet’s caretakers, detailing feeding schedules, any medical restrictions, and a phone number for your veterinarian in case of emergency.
Invest in pet-friendly technology. Just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you can’t interact with your pet! There are now many options for indoor cameras designed with pet owners in mind. These cameras not only allow you to see what your pet is doing, but also allow you to talk to your pet through the speaker and some even allow you to share contacts through the app!
Update your dog’s tags and microchip. If you live in an apartment or house without a fence inside, you have a bad chance that your pet won’t loose, especially if your dog only obeys your commands. It’s important to make sure your pup’s ID is displayed on its collar and its microchip is updated so that when they are found, the good people know who your fur baby belongs to.

“Dog proof” your home. Just as you make your home safe for a barking dog, you should do the same for any dog that is left alone for long periods of time or suffers from being left alone. Chewing is caused by separation anxiety, so it’s important to keep anything dangerous out of your dog’s reach so you don’t risk your dog’s health and protect your belongings from damage.
Consider boarding your dog. One of the surest ways to ensure your dog is safe while you’re away is to leave them with professional pet sitters. This allows your dog to have constant attention from loving staff and the company of other playful dogs. Some boarding facilities even post regular photo updates on social media so you can see how much fun your pup is having!

Thanks for the question! Bringing your dog to Costa Rica means meeting import requirements. An overview of this information can be found here with the USDA. As you can see, you will need a health certificate, a sanity certificate and your dog will be vaccinated against leptospirosis.
You’ll also need to book a flight with a pet-friendly airline (we often use United to fly pets from the United States to Costa Rica) and also make sure you have the correct travel crate.
You should check and make sure you meet the animal import requirements to return to the United States. Most importantly, you must be issued a pet health certificate within 10 days of travel to prove again to the airline that your dog is healthy and fit to fly.
If you have the time and money to travel with your dog (which will be hundreds of dollars when both trips are said and done) and you think your dog will too.
