Day Trips From Nyc Without A Car – One of the best things to do on a summer weekend is a cold spring day trip from New York City. If you’re looking to spend a day in the Hudson Valley full of adventure, shopping, and delicious treats, you’ve come to the right place.

The perfect day trip from NYC to Me starts with a morning tour followed by shopping, food and sweets. With the picturesque Hudson River in the background, the mood couldn’t have been more uplifting.

Cold Spring Village is a small town in the Hudson Valley, about 50 miles north of New York City. It’s one of the most popular day trip destinations outside of the city, attracting many mountain hikers and city dwellers looking for a scenic vacation along the Hudson River. The highly walkable main street is full of unique shops, restaurants and boutiques. Breakneck Ridge, one of the most popular and best hiking trails on the Hudson, has a lot of hiking trails in particular.

Everything You Need To Know About Driving From New York To Florida In One Day

In addition to driving inland, Cold Spring is easily accessible via the Metro-North train line from Manhattan. The trip takes about an hour. You can easily plan your trip with the MTA TrainTime application or check the upcoming schedule on the website. I highly recommend the TrainTime app to plan your day and purchase train tickets to Cold Spring before boarding. Once you board, all you have to do is show the QR code to the conductor as you pass.

On weekends, Metro-North stops at Breakneck Ridge Station, making it even easier to access the trails of Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve. Don’t worry, it’s still an easy walk to Cold Spring Station, and if you want to save energy, it’s only a 5-minute Uber or taxi ride away. Note: Weekend trains are very crowded, especially if the weather is nice. Plan to arrive early at Grand Central or Penn Station to secure a seat.

When you exit Cold Spring Station, you’ll see the subway entrance, the Hudson River side of the city, and an information building. The building has restrooms and a visitor information window for Cold Spring. I was given a map and a guide by the friendly staff.

We took the train to Cold Spring in the morning and it was packed with hikers and day trippers. I boarded our train at Grand Central Station and the cars were full 20 minutes before departure. Since ticketed seats are not reserved, the principle of first-come, first-served applies. I walked up to the booths in front of him to get more open space. When we arrived at the Cold Spring station, it felt like everyone else was getting off the train with us. I had my morning coffee on the train so we started our journey by first walking down Fair Street towards the Hudson Highlands State Park Gateway.

Easy Day Trips From Nyc

Don’t worry about getting lost, especially on weekends. Other tour groups will follow the same route!

One of the biggest attractions of a day trip to Cold Spring is the very famous Breakneck Ridge hike. Although the views are stunning, the trail is steep and notoriously strenuous, with a difficulty rating of “severe”. Ideal for adventurous and advanced climbers who already have rock climbing experience. It’s about a mile to the top, but once you’ve made the hike, it’s much easier to get back to Cold Spring.

On this trip, we chose an easy hike that offers the most amazing views: the Little Stone Point Loop. The route was very doable and led to the banks of the Hudson River. On the way back we visited a high perspective with a beautiful view of the Hudson Valley. Depending on the season, part of the road is covered by tides. Still, it was a great activity to start our day in the cold spring. We were done in less than an hour and ready to head back into town for lunch and browsing. Photos from a very cloudy morning hike. If the sky is clear, the view from the observation deck will be even more beautiful!

I really wanted to do another trip nearby, but our hunger got the better of us and we were ready to explore Cold Spring City! It’s a simple path that takes you past the ruins of a garden. Continue on the trail to the Breakneck Ridge Trail. If you’re looking for the history and scenery of the Hudson Valley, this might be a good choice.

I’d like to mention another hike I’ve enjoyed in the past: the Anthony Nose Trail. This is a moderate hike I did many years ago in late fall. Check out some photos here. The great thing about this hike is that the Appalachian Trail is part of the Anthony’s Nose Trail! The first part of the hike can be a bit challenging because of the many rocky steps to climb, but the view and the new bottom are worth the challenge.

There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars to choose from during your stay in Cold Spring. Order an empanada at Rincon Argentino, dine along the Hudson at Riverview, or grab a seat at a fine French restaurant at Brassiere Le Bouchon. We decided to stop at the newly opened Cozy Corner Café (below) and grab a few treats before heading back into town.

Walk back down Fair Street and you’ll find Main Street, home to Cold Spring’s cafes, shops and restaurants. We found this adorable lunch spot called Cozy Corner Café and filled up. The breakfast and lunch menu features classic, locally sourced and organic American fare, as well as a hearty ribeye steak with an Argentinian influence.

We ordered the seared steak sandwich and the burrata salad to share. I also saw rose petal lemonade on the menu, which was very refreshing!

New York: 5 Epic Day Trips You Must Take

We didn’t order too much for lunch, because afterwards we wanted to make room for dessert, especially ice cream. After a little shopping, we crossed Main Street under the railroad tracks to Moo Moo’s Creamery. Located on the banks of the Hudson River, this was a great treat to end a long day. There is a nice sidewalk and bench to enjoy your cone. Needless to say, the sun came out again after hiding in the clouds all day.

We stopped here before shopping and getting ice cream. We were intrigued by the orange wine board and decided to stay a while. We could sit outside and inside, so we talked and relaxed.

The beauty of planning a cold spring day trip is the mix of activities, from hiking to dining to shopping! The high street had many nice shops, each offering something unique and different. Foodies will love tasting olive oil at The Blue Olive restaurant, and for local wine, head to the Flowercup Wine Shop. The Cheese Shop specializes in New York State cheeses and is a great place to pick up some local food for your next charcuterie and cheese platter. If you’re looking for vintage items and clothing, you’ll find several stores to suit your needs!

We stopped at Mundane, a DIY candle and diffuser store, to buy a new custom scent diffuser for my boyfriend. The very friendly staff will guide you through the candle or diffuser process and explain how to mix the scents. They also have cute fashion items in their background. I put on a green Catskills baseball cap as a souvenir.
