We recently took a 10-hour drive from Melbourne, Victoria, to Aldinga Beach in South Australia with our two Cowoodles. We found dog-friendly spots along the way that made our trip unforgettable.

Dog Friendly Winter Activities Across Victoria
A road trip from Melbourne to South Australia usually takes 8 hours with no pit stops. The trip took about 10 hours as we were traveling with our two beautiful forests, Ollie and Winks. When walking dogs, it is important to take short breaks every two hours. We took this trip on the Easter weekend of 2023, so only four days. Therefore, this tour is ideal for those planning a short trip to Adelaide and the surrounding area.
Space is limited, so it’s important to book a pet-friendly venue in advance. Traveled during the busy holiday season and could not find suitable accommodation for dogs. That’s why we’ve broadened our search to include places that aren’t dog-friendly but have the potential to be (e.g. securely fenced buildings). We contacted the owner by sending a polite message describing our dogs: hypoallergenic, non-shedding, good-natured (our Instagram post always helps!).
The lovely Iluka at Aldinga Beach agreed to let Ollie and Winky stay with us on our trip. This Airbnb is bright and airy and has everything you need for a small stay. Located on the Fleurieu Peninsula, it is surrounded by stunning beaches, the beautiful McLaren Vale wine region and lots of great restaurants and cafes. Ollie and Winky loved the backyard and we could walk to nearby Aldinga Beach whenever we wanted. Symonds Reserve is an excellent dog park five minutes from the property. The owners loved Ollie and Winks so much that there is now room for pets upon request! You can also book this property when planning a trip to the Fleurieu Peninsula with your dog.
Things to Know – Dogs are not allowed at all times except during daylight hours from 10am to 8pm.
Best Dog Friendly Restaurants, Pubs And Cafes In Melbourne
South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula has some of Australia’s best dog-friendly beaches. From the gorgeous sandy beaches of Aldinga Beach (where we stayed) to the rugged coastline of Cape Jervis, there are plenty of options for you and your dogs to enjoy a refreshing swim or long walk along the beach. I was surprised to see that most of these beaches are not connected to each other! Ollie and Winks had so much fun running along the beaches with beautiful views and crystal clear water.
While we were there we visited Normanville Beach, Karikalinga Beach and Port Willunga Beach. All these beaches were always off-leash. Our favorite was Port Willunga beach, with its high cliffs, beautiful caves and ancient timbers, a relic of the coast’s past. We took beautiful photos of the sunrise there. But if you want to take photos of the sunset on the horizon, go to sunset!
Things to note – Dogs are welcome and some stores will let you in if your dog is well-behaved. While you’re there, be sure to visit Beerenberg Farm, a 5-minute drive away. Dogs are not allowed inside.
Located in South Australia’s Adelaide Hills, Hahndorf is an incredibly dog-friendly German town. Thanks to dog-friendly cafes and restaurants, you can easily bring your furry friend to enjoy a delicious meal. My wife loved visiting the Hahndorf Inn and eating German food every time we went. There are many areas for dogs. Many stores on Main Street accept dogs, so you can browse stores that stock well-behaved pups.
Best Dog Beaches Melbourne 2024
This is beyond us humans. We wanted to visit the Barossa Valley, known for its world-famous wines and beautiful scenery. To our surprise, it’s also a dog-friendly place. Many wineries accept dogs, allowing you to tour the vineyards and enjoy wine tasting with your furry friend. Besides the wineries, there are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants and cafes where you can dine or enjoy a snack with your dog. We visited on Easter Sunday and almost everywhere was really busy. Therefore, if you are going to visit during the busy holiday season, we recommend that you make a reservation in advance.
Time of visit – we visited during the Easter holidays so it was really busy. But wineries are beautiful in autumn, so perhaps this is a good time to visit to avoid rush hours.
McLaren Vale is located in the heart of the Fleurieu Peninsula, second only to the Barossa Valley wineries! It’s great to stay in this area as it has easy access to all the great beaches mentioned before, like Port Willunga Beach, and the wineries in the Barossa Valley are great with their dog-friendly outdoor spaces.
Our favorite winery was Down the Rabbit Hole Wines. An even better outdoor vineyard. An old double-decker bus in the garden serves as the perfect backdrop for photos and is the site of wine tasting, making it a truly unique experience. All the outdoor seating, rugs, and more exude a bohemian aesthetic, and there’s always music playing. You can get yourself a reward and enjoy the good feelings with your pup.
Overnight Hiking With My Dog On The Hume & Hovell Track
Time to visit – The color of the lake is somewhat unpredictable as it depends on many factors. We visited in April (autumn) and there was no pink. Some were lucky in the spring.
Things to know – The lake is not always rosy, so check for the latest Google updates or the latest photos on social media. Dogs must be on a leash. As this is a popular holiday destination there is unfortunately a lot of dirt which meant there was broken glass on the floor when we visited. Therefore, be careful when walking your dogs and please do not throw garbage on the ground.
