Today is not like most days. Mom packs a lot of bags. He packs his camera and puts on his shoes. Oh boy is the harness on me and that means I’m going too!

We went out the door. I’m really good at jumping in the car by myself and he tells me I’m a good girl. I love the car because it’s magical. Mother and I go in and sit for a while and then we wonder somewhere together. Sometimes it’s one of my favorite places, and sometimes it’s somewhere completely new.
We go and go. It feels like years and years. We stop several times to go to the bathroom. This is really unusual. where could we go
I put my head out of the window. God, it’s colder outside! And no two smells are the same. This is a new location! The main highway is gone and the roads are more winding. Oh…now I get it! We are going to the mountains!

We get out of the car in a beautiful salon. So many new scents. I’m so excited! After unpacking, mom puts me in the car and we drive to a place called the Ugly Dog Checkout. I wonder if only ugly dogs can come in, if so I won’t let them. I am very beautiful. Mom says an ugly dog is just an expression and all dogs are welcome to eat with their owners in the outdoor patio. So I hang out with my mom while she eats and drinks. After that we return to the cabin. I must sleep before I embark on new adventures!

We had breakfast and returned to the car. This is very exciting! Car rides are my favorite and we will continue. I put my head out of the window. We are on a street with beautiful Christmas lights everywhere. I hear mother says this is the main street of Highland.
We stop and go for a walk. We go to the shops and all the people in the shops greet me and caress me. Mom says if I’m good, we’ll go get some food, so I’m sure I’m really, really good.
One shop on the main street has dogs. We’re in and that’s a deal for me! Toys and treats are everywhere! This is Highlands Mountain Paws. My mom goes to the treat buffet and fills me up with natural treats as I greet my new poodle friend at the store. He will also pick up a new rope toy. After checking out, we head back to the car and I enjoy one of my treats…but not for long!
We got in the car and minutes later we were at the Highlands Dog Park! I have so many dogs to play with. I join the Australian Shepherd and we run, run, run through the dog park. Mom pulls out a rope toy she bought for me at Highlands Mountain Paws and an Australian Shepherd named Lucy and I start playing my favorite game, tug of war.

After all, I am very tired. I just jumped into the dog park. I’m ready for bed. So mom and I load up and head back to the pet kennel. He put me in my box so as to calm me down from all excitement, and told me that he and his friends would go shopping and have a nice dinner at Wolfgang’s in the Highlands.
Mom leaves and tells her friend she’s so happy they went on a dog vacation to North Carolina. And I’m sure I’m happy too! We drive a little and arrive at Panthertown Valley. This scares me a little because I’ve heard panthers are big, nasty cats. But mom says there are no panthers, so we can try.
I love being in the mountains. Fresh mountain air feels very good. There are so many new sounds and smells in the forest that I don’t recognize but still love. Finally we reach the goal and I can’t believe it. It’s water, but there’s a lot of it, and it’s moving very fast and loud. And this is the pool where my game ends! Mom says we went to Granny Burrell Falls. I swim in the water and he tells me I’m a great swimmer. We have to leave the waterfalls eventually, but we walk in the forest for a while. It’s great to be with my mom. We get back in the car and I wrap myself in a towel to dry off.
Mom says she has one more stop before she goes home. We ride in the parking lot and enter the building. Wow! There are pictures of dogs all over the walls. A beautiful woman comes from behind the table and gives me a gift. Well, I like it here. Everyone asks to pet me and asks my mom what kind of dog I am. He proudly tells them that I am a Wheaten Terrier. I jump on one of their comfy couches while he talks to them. She thanks them for the pet-friendly accommodations and asks them about booking another pet-friendly cabin next spring.
