Dog Friendly Vacations In Oregon – The west coast is beautiful, I don’t think anyone would argue with that. But in my humble opinion, the Oregon coast has the most amazing scenery and variety of sights and attractions. As someone who is very attached to my dog, it also means a lot that the Oregon coast is also the most dog friendly. Let me explain what I think is the most complete guide to the must see places for you and your dog.
While most of the places were dog friendly and there was plenty of room for our six legs to stretch out, there were a few places that I didn’t mention in the article. Whether you’re traveling with your fur baby or not, let me guide you on the PNW Coast, from Astoria to Crescent City, to avoid the crowds, do it on a budget, and create memories that last a lifetime throughout life.

I plan to take at least a full week to cover the entire coast, but plan longer if you want to see everything you want to see!

Travel tip: Many places to visit have parking charges. You might consider buying an Oregon Pacific beach pass or an Oregon State Park pass as it will be cheaper in the long run than paying for each park pass.
If you’re coming from Portland, you might want to start at the north end of the coast in Astoria and work your way down the coast from there. Astoria is a great beach town with lots of hills and lots to do. and observe.
One place you’ll want to include on your Astoria itinerary is the Astoria Column. If you climb the stairs on the highest hill of the city there is a wonderful view of the surrounding area. From the top of the column you can see where the Pacific Ocean meets the Columbia River and the Youngs River, as well as the Astoria-Megler Bridge.
Now you can’t take your dog to the top of the pole because there’s barely enough room inside the pole to push people away, let alone a grumpy dog. But you can walk to the top of the hill, have lunch at one of the picnic tables, and enjoy the view from the top of the hill with your fur baby.

If you have children with you, you can even buy a small wooden slide cheaply to lift them to the top and slide them down. Parking costs $5.
Another fun thing for the kids is the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. It’s free (although donations are accepted for maintenance) and they take you up and down part of the Columbia River on a historic trolley.
History lovers will learn about the fascinating history of the region. And one more advantage, if you have a well-behaved dog, you can take your dog on this brisk walk!
Another good stop is the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. Lots of interesting history, castles to explore and beautiful paths through the trees and along the river.

Go inside and see the inside of the wreck and let your imagination tell its own story of an ill-fated shipwreck! In the summer, if you are lucky enough to have the right conditions (mild temperature, no moon, no fog, etc.), this is a great place to discover the bioluminescent algae that light up the waves!
I managed to go one night last summer (2021) and although it was too foggy to see the waves, there was seaweed on the sand and it was truly magical to see the sand come to life with each step taken by my dog and me. !

As you head down the coast, the first place to stop is Ecola State Park. As mentioned before, this is one of the Goonies filming locations, with some recognizable spots (like the part where they hold up the base to compare it to the rock outcrops).
The park’s Indian Beach is also one of the Twilight filming locations, but it’s also a great spot for surfers! There are wonderful paths to walk among the moss covered trees of the rainforest. In the spring, it is also a great place to see humpback whales and humpback whales migrating north from their wintering grounds.
Just south of Ecola State Park (and visible from the park) is Cannon Beach! These iconic and beautiful rock formations provide the perfect backdrop for a spectacular sunset. There are also pools that can be fished at low tide.
Travel tip: Remember that many things to do and see on the beach depend on the tides, so be sure to check the tide tables before you start your trip.
Visit The Oregon Coast: A Pet Friendly Vacation
Continuing along the coast, a quick stop at Hug Point State Recreation beach is worth it. There is a waterfall on the shore and also some shallow caves near the water that my inner child was eager to explore.
Tillamook Cheese Factory is the next stop you’ll definitely add to your coastal itinerary. It’s a free self-guided tour where you’ll be guided through every step of making delicious cheese!
At the end of the tour you will still be able to taste some of the delicious cheeses, but be careful! They get stuck there!
I definitely recommend buying a bag of cottage cheese to eat fresh or take home and bake later! It’s a great place for lunch as there is also a counter where you can order food made with your own cheese or even ice cream!

Leaving Tillamook it is a short drive to the next destination, the Neskowin Ghost Forest. It is worth going at low tide to see the forest claimed by the ocean. It can be a bit scary, especially when there is fog, but it is definitely worth seeing the remains of these ancient trees and how the ancient stumps stand despite the force of the sea waves shaping/sculpting the rock.
Another great stop is to see the Devil’s Batting Bowl. It’s a large collapsed sea cave that you can climb down and into at low tide. It’s also amazing from top to bottom, so if you don’t have much time to travel (like me!), it’s a quick stop. But I wish I had taken the time to go down and see the formation from the inside.
