Dog Friendly Vacations Upstate Ny

Dog Friendly Vacations Upstate Ny – Like most busy pet parents, I try to make time to take my pup, Zoe, on dog-friendly outings. Growing up in an outdoorsy family, my childhood was full of hiking and traveling. I couldn’t wait to relive some of those memories with my little fur. So when we were offered the chance to win a weekend away through Getaway Rentals, I was already in my hiking boots!

I’ve often heard of people traveling to New York State, but I’ve never been there myself. Everything changed in 2019. spring when I had the opportunity to stay at the Getaway House in the Catskill Mountains.

Along with my colleague Danielle and her dog, Sawyer, we check out of the office and head north to take our mind off the “movement” and focus on the beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air.

We started our journey home on Friday morning. It was more relaxed than the usual Friday morning commute to the office, that’s for sure.

The foggy weather made for a nice 120 mile drive north with a highway soundtrack playing and fresh air blowing through the car windows. The dogs loved sleeping in the back seat and Zoe even took to pulling out of my jacket.

For anxious four-legged travelers, tranquilizers are sure to come in handy, especially on long trips, and we keep them handy. I wish I had brought Zoe’s d on the trek up north.

When we arrived at our dog-friendly home, the dogs couldn’t have been more excited to explore, so we led them around the farmstead (or let’s say they led us) before heading to their tiny and cozy home. .

Upon entering our home, we were pleasantly surprised by the smell of fresh wood, and a beautiful bay window lit up the entire space. Queen-d was laid out with laundered linens and a small box of s’mores, and a letter greeted us for the next few days away from home.

There was a small kitchenette with everything you need to cook, a small pantry with snacks, and a bathroom with a shower with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.

After dropping off our bags (see what we packed for the trip here ), we got back in the car and headed north to Albany, NY for coffee and dinner. We hadn’t originally planned to visit Albany, but since we’ve never been there and it’s so close, our staff encouraged us to walk around the state capital.

After a quick coffee at Stacks Espresso Bar, a friendly local cafe with a wide range of teas and coffees, cakes and even a variety of dairy products, we explored the city on foot and on foot.

Albany’s many restaurants, shops and cafes cater for the little and delicate, and there’s plenty to explore in the state capital. We walked down historic Lark Street, where the old shops and brownstones reminded us of New York. Then we went to the impressive building of the New York State Department of Education, which was opened in 1912. We didn’t get a chance to go inside the building, but we were impressed by the 90-foot tall marble pillars out front. The dogs enjoyed playing with us in the grassy park nearby and we went to the Iron Gate Cafe for a snack.

Located next to the 1890s brownstone Holroyd Mansion, Iron Gate offers fresh food and vegan options, as well as a cozy outdoor terrace. This is a great restaurant with two good dogs, although it can be more difficult with larger or louder dogs as people have to walk to the outside chairs to get into the restaurant.

I ordered the Vermonster, a turkey sandwich with cheddar cheese, apple, lettuce, and maple-walnut spread, while Danielle made the Buddha Bowl with roasted sweet potato, avocado, spinach, broccoli, quinoa, and tofu. We got half of our meal before the rain started.

We packed food, caught the dogs and tried to get to the car before the rain. Pet care isn’t perfect, but it makes for a good time. We finished eating in the car, laughing at our dogs’ dirty feet and heads, and headed back south.

Fortunately for us, the spring rains were short-lived and hit us within an hour. So, we continued with our plans to explore Caterskill Falls.

The first way to Catterskill Falls is to walk. An easy dog-friendly hike that takes about 2 hours round trip.

We left the car in the NY-23A parking lot, just around the corner from the boardwalk. A small waterfall at the start served as a humbling and impressive sight of the sight that awaited us. Although steep and rocky in places, the 2.5 mile hike was well worth the effort. The second section, a waterfall – the tallest in New York State – marked the end of the trail and gave us a chance to rest and enjoy what we had accomplished.

Zoe and Sawyer are strong fighters. I would definitely recommend this hike for pet parents and dogs who are used to exploring nature, but be careful with small dogs as they can slip and get stuck in the rocks. If you’re going, bring plenty of extra water for your four-legged hikers and take breaks along the way to let them (and you!)

After the hike, we went to a nearby Chinese restaurant (cash only), Fortune Garden, to grab takeout. We fed our dogs food before sitting down to dinner. Sweet and sour chicken with Dr. Peppers have never been more in tune or satisfying.

After each mouthful, we lit a campfire to enjoy a delicious meal: a box of s’mores was waiting for us when we arrived at our cabins. Even well-behaved pups, I recommend keeping them on a short leash so they don’t walk too close to the fire (and what’s more, chocolate is poisonous to dogs!). While roasting marshmallows, Daniel and I talked about the events of the busy day. Early on we knew it was getting late and it was time for us and our little dogs to go home for a good night’s sleep.

Waking up the next morning to the large window overlooking the pine trees was a breath of fresh air compared to the view (and loud noise) I was used to! Zoe took her time crawling out of the fridge and I whipped up a Chewy Eats DIY trail mix bar to give away on our day hike.

While we were putting food in the fridge at home, we all went for a walk in the yard to take in the view and relax. The walk was relatively quiet and leisurely, and the air was filled with the happy sniffing and patting of dogs’ paws. We didn’t see many other people on the way home, but there were a few visitors from afar, on their way home from home for the weekend with their furry four-legged family. We gave a loving wave to the dog parents before heading back to our home to get ready for the day.

After packing our road bikes and packing our backpacks, we went for breakfast. We went to Circle W Market for fresh food and drinks on Getaway’s recommendation.

This small market has a small outdoor seating area perfect for picky eaters, and the sweet and savory dishes are a great way to start any day. We enjoyed grilled turkey panini, waffles and avocado toast with cold lemon orange juice and matcha lattes.

Before using Zoe in 2017, I had always heard that pugs are generally not very athletic and can get tired due to their short stature. Boy did my Pug prove them wrong! Always two steps ahead of me, both literally and figuratively, Zoe led our group of four on a 5-mile hike up Overlook Mountain, come right back.

Although the rock formations are smaller than Caterskill Falls and more covered in gravel, getting to the top of Overlook Mountain was quite difficult. There was constant resistance to contend with, but the cold weather and thick fog filled the air with confusion and curiosity. And this curiosity will not disappoint!
