If you love your dog and love to be active and outdoors, hiking with your dog is as good as it gets. As summer rolls in, you’re as likely to encounter a four-legged companion on the road as anyone else.
My husband and I live in a dense urban area and we take full advantage of the Olmsted-designed neighborhood park. But there’s nothing better than our three-year-old Great Pyrenees mix, born to hike, stretch their legs and get out into the countryside. So we recently went to a nearby state park to check out an abandoned amusement park (which was so cute!).

Dog parent and veterinarian David Wohlstadter of BluePearl Pet Hospital in New York is an avid traveler.
So what do you need to know before you hit the road? Know your dog and know how good it is for you.
