Dexter’s 2019 epic dog adventure has officially begun! January and February were full of local dog-friendly day trips, but Cambridge, Ohio was our first pet-friendly weekend. Dog walking is always more fun with friends, so I invited Dexter’s best friend Levy and his mom, Kris, to join us.
Spectacular Midwest Fall Getaways For Families
Cambridge, Ohio is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Ohio in Guernsey County. With a population of around 13,000, this small town was the perfect destination for dogs to explore.
Our first stop was lunch at McKenna Market in downtown Cambridge. This dog friendly restaurant had outdoor seating and with the sun shining, we stayed warm and dry even in March! This family-owned market is owned by the McKenna family, who have been in the deli and market business since the 1970s. McKenna’s Market is known for its amazing homemade meals and salads, and we knew we were in for a great experience.
The menu was extensive and offered a variety of dishes to satisfy all taste buds. Chris ordered the shrimp basket and I went with the chicken fiesta salad. Hot coffee for us and the dogs, they were welcomed with cold water and treats for the dogs.
While we were sipping our coffee, people came up to us, chatting and petting their dogs. They were very popular and everyone was so nice and friendly. McKenna’s front door had people coming in and out throughout our lunch; They have a jumping business. When our food arrived, I quickly understood why. The food was amazing!

When I travel, I really try to order foods that aren’t my usual fare and I’m usually quite satisfied. The fiesta salad was the bomb! It was so fresh, colorful and full of flavor. My taste buds and stomach were very pleased. Chris’s shrimp and chips looked hot and inviting. She said they were cooked to perfection.
After lunch I toured the interior of McKenna Market. It was stocked with bulk snacks, fruit, candy, gourmet cheeses, meats, artisanal and local foods, fresh coffee beans, vintage sodas, wines and more. I invited some of their famous followers to dinner with a bag of fresh coffee.
We thought it would be fun to wander the city and look for sculptures, murals, fun and strange local landmarks. We were not disappointed. Cambridge was the home of former astronaut and US Senator John Glenn. Although we were unable to visit the John and Annie Glenn Museum with dogs, we did find an Ohio historical marker for it.
Another local celebrity was William Boyd. William Boyd rose to prominence as cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy, who appeared on the big screen in the 1930s and 1940s and on television in the 1950s Cambridge has the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, a collection of memorabilia displayed at various locations throughout historic downtown Cambridge. . It was fun finding exhibits.

Our bellies wanted something sweet, so we headed to Kennedy’s Bakery. Kennedy Bakery has been serving Cambridge since 1925. Family members have been baking for over 80 years. This bakery seemed like the perfect place to buy pastries.
When I walked in, I was greeted with a warm smile and the sweet smell of freshly baked cookies. There were so many cute items to choose from! I was surrounded by freshly baked cookies, breads, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, doughnuts, pastries, sweets and much more.
One of the owners, Patty, gave me a behind the scenes tour. I was shocked at how huge the bakery was. They had vintage ovens and equipment that they had been using since they launched their store. I loved the whole family’s love and dedication to the bakery and their community. It was quite an interesting experience.
Before I left, I ordered a rich chocolate brownie, a fresh donut, and some of their best-selling tea cookies. When I bit into this decadent cupcake, it was clear that this muffin was made with love and fresh ingredients. The tea cookies were so delicious I almost didn’t want to eat them. But I’m glad I did; They were moist with just the right amount of sweetness.
