Our son Lincoln has been with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we love road trips. Simply put, jumping in the car is the most convenient way for us to travel (and we take Lincoln everywhere we go).

Here are his favorite places to visit in the past three years and what he will choose when planning our next trip.

In summer, take advantage of longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures than you’ll find in other countries at this time of year. Or travel in the fall to take advantage of the fall foliage at one of the best places in the world to see leaves.
We spent five months in Ontario and New England on our 2022 cruise. We spent two weeks in VT in July, one week camping on the Schodick Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three week near Lake Placid, mid-August in Campton, NY, one month in September, three weeks in Ellsworth. , ME in early October, and Attleboro, MA for three weeks in late October. (We spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
There’s never been a better time to be in New England during these months. Of course, the summer months can be warm at night, but make sure your rental has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we’re speaking as Texas residents, so our heat tolerance is higher than our climb.

However, if you want to plan your fall foliage trip, consider traveling in the second week of October. Although the areas are known for their busy roads (namely Kankamagus Highway and Stow, VT), the views are worth it!
RTL Comment: Do you want more time to run or want to stay on the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Want to hit the cool streets with hot apple cider in hand? Visit in October. Do you prefer cooler temperatures and less crowds? Visit in September.
Lincoln loves the road trips we take because it’s easier for him to join us. If you are going to drive anywhere else this way, we recommend it. Run this way until you get to the nearest point and make a loop back home.
However, if you can’t drive here and have a good dog on the plane, you can get a rental car once you land at Boston International Airport. If you are flying in, we recommend changing this route a bit and driving from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

We recommend treating this tour as a traditional tour where you stay at a different location at each stop on your journey. You can find campsites almost anywhere or stay in nearby towns.
For Lincoln, NH, consider Pemi River or Lost River Valley Campgrounds or downtown Lincoln. (Can’t find anything in Lincoln? Check out Campton, NH, 20 miles to the south. We spent a good month at one of the red tents in Campton.)
For Lake Placid, consider Rollins Pond Campground, Ausable Chasm Campground, or Lake Placid Village. (Want to see the real sights? Find a place to stay in Lake Placid Village.
Best Places To Live In New England
Autumn Lake. The Mirror Lake Inn has dog-friendly rooms and a restaurant with a dog-friendly patio. Can’t find anything in Lake Placid? (Try somewhere in Wilmington.)
For Stowe, consider Smugglers Notch State Park Campground or downtown Stowe. (You might want to consider a place about 40 minutes from Burlington. Downtown Burlington is dog friendly!)
For Acadia National Park, consider Blackwoods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you go to Ellsworth, watch Blue Hill climb at sunset. Awesome, dog friendly, and compete in Acadia with 1/100 the population. !
Lincoln (the city, not to be confused with our dog, has the same name) is located among the White Mountains in New Hampshire. This makes it a great place to go for dog walking.

You could spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire because there are TONS of dog friendly hikes and things to do nearby! (We’ve been here for a month and we haven’t seen everything on our list!)
But since we’re only planning one day for you to enjoy the White Mountains on this trip, here are our top picks for the best things to do.
This is a bonus because you can drive the Kancamagus Road from Portland to Lincoln. (So you’ll come back to this section when you drive through that on your trip. If you don’t do the loop this way, allow about two hours to drive there and back to the highway Kancamagus when you go. Lincoln.)

The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In The Uk
The Kankamagus Highway is 34 miles between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. This is one of New Hampshire’s most popular hikes and one of the best places to view fall foliage in the United States. Although there are many separate routes on this beautiful route that will keep you going throughout your journey, we recommend stopping at the lifts along this route. (The next one will be better!) Review: Going in the fall? Get up soon. This bus fills up quickly, so ride at night or get up early to avoid long lines and heavy traffic on your way. Kankamagus Highway is great, but not your only day trip!
Let’s take you and your pup for a ride in the woods! During the months in New Hampshire, hiking is the most exhausting activity for us. We go sightseeing every weekend and most Friday nights. Spending time outdoors and hitting the trails is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can find our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendation, we recommend visiting Mount Welch-Dickie. This approximately 4.4 mile long is a fun half day trail with mountain views. Keep the dog well-trained, well-trained, and have a lot of fun when you go to different places between open rocks and forest trails.
