Although our trips to Southern California with pups (Babu: 2010-2021, now Gunda) pale in comparison to our extensive runs in Northern California, we were able to explore the state from Santa Barbara south during this time some areas. A) Southern California is known for its warm, sunny California weather almost year-round, as well as warm waters perfect for swimming. However, summer is hot, which can be painful for you and not good for your kids (especially sensitive feet). So if you’re planning a dog-friendly trip to Southern California between June and September, choose beach towns rather than inland areas.
San Diego Beaches: Dog Beach/voltaire Beach
November through March is the best time to visit rural areas like Palm Springs, Ojai, or Joshua Tree, which are popular winter destinations in California. However, winter is California’s rainy season, so be prepared for rain and be flexible with your plans.
B) If you’re planning a day trip from Los Angeles or San Diego, it’s best to drive yourself. You can rent a car from Los Angeles or San Diego at any major airport serving Southern California.
Los Angeles is very dog-friendly, but due to its location, it’s also close to some dog-friendly areas of Southern California that you should definitely check out if you have extra time. Another thing is, there are no beaches in Los Angeles itself that allow dogs, so that’s an incentive to walk your dog somewhere outside of Los Angeles. Here are my picks based on our visit to Babu and Gonda during our winter vacation:
Just a 30-minute drive from Los Angeles, Long Beach is home to the area’s most popular dog beach, Rosie’s Dog Beach. Plus, Belmont Shore’s shops, shops, and restaurants are very dog-friendly.
The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In California
There are 11 dog parks in Long Beach, the most popular of which are Recreation Park, Eldorado Park, Uptown Dog Park, K-9 Corner Dog Park, and Bixby Dog Park. Beyond that, there are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants on Fourth Street, downtown, Belmont Heights, and downtown, and you can check them all out at this dog-friendly Long Beach spot!

Malibu is synonymous with Hollywood celebrity retreats and weddings, but it’s also popular with furry friends! Leo Carrillo State Beach is dog-friendly, and the Santa Monica Mountains have plenty of dog-friendly hikes to keep your pup busy. Plus, there’s the lesser-known Malibu Wine Country, where you can take your dog on a wine tasting.
I recommend stopping at Escondido Canyon Park, hiking the dog-friendly Escondido Falls Trail, exploring the Solstice Canyon Trail, hiking the Zuma Canyon Loop Trail, or taking the Mishmoqua to Hike the Allen Mountain Trail, a dog-friendly hike in Malibu. Dog Sledding Tours In Alaska
Ojai is one of the top dog-friendly destinations in Southern California and one of the destinations we visited on our 2019 road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles. While the city doesn’t have dog-friendly beaches, there are plenty of other dog-friendly activities to explore in this artsy Southern California town.
Explore the Arcade Square dog shop, browse Barts Books, sip kombucha at Revel Kombucha Bar and take your dog for a walk in Libby Park. Ojai has many dog-friendly restaurants and cafes such as Farmer and The Cook, Beacon Coffee Company, The Nest (great patio area) Lebanese Ojai Rotie. Perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Ojai is home to several wineries such as Topa Mountain Winery and Old Creek Ranch Winery that you should check out if you are a wine lover. We loved our short winter stay in Ojai and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Santa Barbara is often called the “American Riviera” for its pristine beaches, swaying palm trees, and a year-round summer atmosphere that’s hard to beat. Santa Barbara is very dog-friendly, with many dog beaches, restaurants, and other attractions. If your dog loves the ocean and sand, Santa Barbara is a dog-friendly day trip from Los Angeles that you should check out.
A Local’s Weekend Guide To San Diego: 3 Day Itinerary
We have visited Santa Barbara many times over the past 12 years and it is a lot of fun exploring the city with our dogs, rain or shine. Even if you only have one day in Santa Barbara, you can visit plenty of beaches and dog parks.
My suggestion is to start your day at Hendry Beach (aka Arroyobro Beach County Park) near Douglas Family Preserve, or visit Thousand Steps Beach and quiet Mesa Lane Beach for a walk in Shoreline Park , and then through the Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens.
The Santa Barbara Pier and Santa Barbara Mission Rose Garden are dog-friendly, and the local courthouse gardens are not to be missed. If that’s not all, the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden allows dogs, free of charge!
La Arcada Plaza and the Funk District in downtown Santa Barbara are great places to explore and enjoy a meal with your dog. Additionally, Santa Barbara has several dog-friendly tasting rooms, giving you the perfect opportunity to taste some of the best wines in the Santa Ynez Valley. San Diego Vacation Rentals & Homes
Solvang (meaning “sunny field” in Danish) seems to come from a Danish fairy tale. This unique Scandinavian-style town is one of the most beautiful cities in California and is also very dog-friendly.
We have been to Solvang twice in the past and loved everything about it. The main function, ie. The Town Square is just off Mission Drive, so you can easily access the square on your way from Los Angeles.
In addition to the playground and the Little Mermaid Fountain, another dog-friendly place in Solvang is the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, which houses many of the Danish author’s memorable literary works. The grill is dog friendly, there’s outdoor seating, and if you’re a wine lover, the Wandering Dog Bar is a must!
You can head to one of the many dog-friendly shops outside Solvang, taste wine in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley and at American Ostrichland (an ostrich and emu farm), and feed these fun birds with your pup kind. !
