Covering nearly 800,000 acres, the park is slightly larger than Rhode Island, so surprisingly there aren’t too many options for adventures with your pet. But don’t worry, I’ve compiled a short list of my favorite pet-friendly things to do in Joshua Tree National Park so you don’t have to leave your best things at home.
Dogs are allowed on the roads and not all roads in Joshua Tree National Park are paved. The main thing is to find dirt roads where you can walk with your friend. The number of cars and people on many of these dirt roads is low, which is an added bonus.

To access this dirt road, simply park in the Echo T lot. You will see a small dirt road next to the parking lot. The dirt road is about a mile before reaching a restricted area of the park. You can turn around and come back with Fido for a quiet and peaceful two-mile walk!
The Geology Tour Road is a favorite with adventurers and their pets. The road is known for its 18-mile loop. Four-wheel drive is also recommended for part of the tour. Since it is a dirt road, you can bring your pet. And a fun place to walk the dog.
When I explored I only saw a few cars and you can take a tour guide and visit different geological sites. Plus, since it’s 18 miles, you can walk as little or as far as you want.
So these are two of my favorite places to get lemons when I go to JTNP. I’ve also read that Oasis of Mara is pet friendly. A 0.5-mile loop where you can explore a desert oasis. Located at the Oasis Visitor Center. However I have never been here so can’t comment about the trip.

Although animals are less likely to be out on busy roads with vehicles, you may encounter them from time to time, so it’s best to be prepared.
Plant life can also be a problem. In addition to the sharp thorns of native cacti, some plants are also poisonous if ingested. Research your local flora and keep a close eye on your pets to make sure they don’t eat your bush.

The Oasis of the Mara Trail is a simple paved loop through a true desert oasis. The Oasis of the Mara at Twentynine Palms is located just behind the Visitor Center.
The trail itself is flat and 0.5 miles long. A full track takes the average hiker and dog 30–45 minutes.
Interpretive information boards are a great benefit of this walk. Through these you can know the history and local stories of that place. You can also find plants like beaver cactus and desert mistletoe.

The Keys View Trail is a short walk with great rewards. This hike is only 0.25 miles long and takes you to Keys View.
This stunning viewpoint offers a unique view of the surrounding valley. You can see the Salton Sea, the San Andreas Fault, Mount San Jacinto, and Mount San Gorgonio. A great place to make some memories of your trip.
Get off the trail and stroll along Queen Valley Road. It’s a relatively quiet road, so although you’ll meet other travelers from time to time, you won’t be overwhelmed by the crowds.
We found that the silence of this road attracts many animals. If you’re hoping to see some of the area’s wildlife up close, don’t miss out! This is a great opportunity to do so.

There are many unexpected turns on this road. If you’re not familiar with the park, it’s best to stick to the main road. It’s fairly open and shade-less, so be sure to pack enough water for you and your dog.
The Geology Tour Road is considered one of the easiest 4×4 trails in Joshua Tree. You can also explore on foot! It’s 11.7 miles long, giving you a great taste of the desert and the surrounding desert.
This was one of our favorite places to visit because we found it relatively quiet. The fact that another section of the trail requires 4WD prevents many visitors from reaching its full length. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, head straight towards this unpaved section of track.
Looking for something more adventurous? Pinkham Canyon Road is a great way to combine hiking and 4WD with your dog.
Backpacking Joshua Tree National Park
If your vehicle is ready, why not try covering part of the route by car before exploring your favorite spots on foot? At 19.2 miles long, you’ll have plenty of options to combine your modes of transportation.
This trail starts from the Visitor Centre. If you’re planning a visit, it’s always a good idea to stop in first and chat to the staff. They can tell you about road conditions and if there are any hazards you should be aware of. This is a difficult course, so be prepared and be careful.
Stirrup Tank Road is another quick, dog-friendly option. Its total length is 1.5 miles, making it popular with both hikers and mountain bikers.
Look at the rocky granite rocks and enjoy the peace. If you love rock climbing, this is a great course for you! The stirrup tank itself is an interesting structure that we can take a closer look at.

A moderate-length, one-way trail that offers excellent views of the surrounding desert. Although beautiful, there is really nothing special about this course.
This road has both upper and lower sections. How long the tour lasts depends on how much you want to achieve. 4×4 access only, so if possible I suggest walking to the track and then exploring our favorite spots on foot.
This is the best way to get the full experience as Eureka Peak is an extremely steep section towards the end of the route. From the top, you can see everything from Palm Springs to the Morongo Basin.
A short and easy route connecting Park Boulevard and Queen Valley Road. You’ll see lots of Joshua trees and the Transverse Mountain Range in the distance.
