Some people love whiskey, but most people love dogs, and when it comes time for a holiday, these days people are increasingly taking the family dog along. It’s true that the demand for dog tourism is so high these days that many hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions that previously only catered to humans are now opening their doors to pets. This trend has fueled record use of private jets, and NetJets is now even training dogs for its staff. But you don’t need a private jet to enjoy a fun-filled vacation with your best friends in Kentucky, where the country’s richest whiskey culture offers excellent dog amenities. Call it southern hospitality, dog style.
Welcome to Louisville! Start your trip to Kentucky’s largest city by visiting what few other cities have: the “Dog Park Bar.” PG&J is a complete indoor/outdoor dog park and bar, and like all the best furry spots, it’s named after the dogs (Paco, Gene, and J Rod). It’s huge, with an open pavilion, covered and open picnic tables, and a high top made from old bourbon barrels. There is actually a dog park with speed courses and a kiddie pool, but dogs are allowed everywhere, even in bars. The focus is on craft beer, with ten beers on tap, but they have a core selection of local bourbon, Tennessee and Irish whiskeys, and all the signature “pup-tails” are named after regular customers’ dogs. Hank’s Good Boy Old Fashioned uses Four Roses bourbon with simple syrup and orange and chocolate bitters (a day pass is $10, and since they require proof of your pup’s vaccinations, out-of-town visitors must sign up online). If it were the only dog park in town, it would be impressive, but there’s also the Club K9 Dog Bar, a 1½-acre fenced area, a separate play area for small dogs, a swimming pool, a human delivery truck, 7,000 square feet of indoor space, and, of course, Full service bar (same day admission and vaccination policy like PG&J).
But you don’t have to go out to enjoy whiskey with your pup. Louisville has plenty to choose from, and the best are concentrated on the city’s historic Whiskey Row, the tourist heart of the city, home to Rabbit Hole, Angel’s Envy, Kentucky Peerless, Evan Williams, Michter’s and Old Forester distilleries or visitor centers. Whiskey Row also has the two-year-old Hotel Distil, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, a boutique that doesn’t conform to cookie-cutter brands. Check out your dog getting a dog toy filled with a bourbon bottle and a dog bed made out of a barrel. Distil has a large outdoor patio bar on the second floor, and while its excellent restaurant, Repeal Oak Fired Steakhouse, can’t accommodate your dog, it’s worth ordering room service. This is a place where the meat is cooked over a bourbon barrel fire, and despite what it sounds like, the steaks are amazing, accompanied by a long whiskey list.
Frank’s Whiskey Place is another new addition downtown, just a two-minute walk from the Distillery Hotel. It looks like a typical neighborhood bar in the middle of storefronts, but it has a cartoon dog in its logo—always a good sign—and it’s named after the owner’s pup. The weekly highlight is Tail Wagging Tuesday, a local shelter fundraiser with a dog truck, drink specials and prizes (human and canine), but dogs are always welcome, and Frank’s has live music and likes a distillery show within walking distance. There’s a wider selection of whiskeys at Down One Bourbon Bar, also two minutes away. Down One allows dogs, has indoor and outdoor seating, and is a modern full-service restaurant with Southern-influenced tacos and bar food. Behind the bar is a floor-to-ceiling whiskey display with rare items displayed on a chalkboard. The list has more than 120 options, including all local bourbons and many hard-to-find spirits like Kentucky King, Weller Craft Your Perfect Bourbon and George T. Stagg. The old-fashioned design uses four roses, and there are also some flavored ribbons and personalized barrel bottles.
