Dog Friendly Vacations Kentucky – Driving through the Midwest, we discovered we had a few days left to lock down our sites in Kentucky’s Land Between the Lakes. If you love the outdoors and want to reconnect with nature, this is for you!
Early settlers in southwestern Kentucky called the area “Between the Rivers” because the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers meet within a few miles. When the two rivers were dammed to facilitate navigation and Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley were formed, the remaining land between them became a national recreation area. Now filled with 170,000 acres, 300 miles of undeveloped coastline, offering every nature-loving opportunity you can imagine!

Over 200 kilometers of trails and country roads cover the park and your dog is welcome to join you! Stop by the Golden Pond Visitor Center for maps and hiking-only tips so you don’t get spooked by mountain bikers. Whether it’s an afternoon hike or an overnight tour that takes you from one end of the park to the other, you’ll find plenty of places to explore. And, if you prefer larger pets, there are 100 miles of horse trails and trails, as well as camping facilities with horse accommodations.

Your pet-friendly options aren’t limited to hiking! How about a visit to The Homeplace, an 1850s farmhouse/living history museum with rare and endangered pets and costumed actors going about their daily business? The farm has 16 original and restored log structures, and the houses are furnished with antique furniture and artifacts. Many of the buildings were moved less than 10 miles from their current location, but one house was put on a barge and floated aloft! The farm is open from March to November and admission is $4 per person – dogs are free.
From there, hike through the elk and bison prairie. As you drive down the winding road, you see the landscape as the Shawnee would have seen it 200 years ago, minus the road. Before the forests took over, the area was a grassland where herds of bison and elk roamed. Using carefully controlled burns, as done by Native Americans, this 700-acre preserve has been restored to its native habitat, including animals that had long since disappeared from the area. Your dog will help you spot wildlife in your car.
Canoeing, bird watching, fishing, and camping are all available in this area. You could easily stay a week and not have time to do everything. When your pup is ready for bed, check out the visitor center’s planetarium and observatory. Programs and performances are scheduled throughout the March-December period, so plan accordingly.
There’s another place you’ll want to visit where you can’t bring your dog: The Woodlands Nature Station. They have many animals on display, including a great horned owl, a coyote and a red wolf. They also organize special guided programs such as moonlight canoe trips, evening nature walks and seminars on wildlife, gardening and nature photography.

There are plenty of pet-friendly campgrounds to choose from in and around the Land Between the Lakes, but if you’re looking for the ultimate pet-friendly experience, visit the folks at Prize Point Marina & Resort. Located a short distance from the park, the resort sits on 101 acres and is surrounded on three sides by Lake Barkley; You won’t find a place without a view! And if you’re lucky, some locals will enjoy it.
Don’t have an RV? No problem! You can rent cabins, chalets, villas, apartments or three-bedroom cottages; Everything is pet friendly! Looking for a little more adventure? Try renting one of the houseboats; Pets are also allowed!
The resort has an off-leash area for dogs and a dog swimming area, as well as plenty of activities to keep the kids busy!
We loved having the marina there…not only can you see the boats coming in, but there are also pet friendly rentals! We had our first experience on a pontoon boat and Buster and Ty were excited to spend the afternoon on the water; As it turns out, these are very nice boats.

After several months on the road, this stop was incredible. We were working in camps most of the time, but I was drawn to it. It was quiet and relaxing and I saw him turn off the computer, radio and phone. The simple sounds of birds calling and insects singing brought my brain to life. Better to watch herons fishing and barges ply the river than a day at the spa. Sitting in your lawn chair, soaking up the beautiful scenery and enjoying the sunset… could anything be better?

Rock climbing abounds at #RedRiverGorgeous. But hiking trails, fun outdoor spaces like Miguel’s Pizza, and an area surrounded by state parks and national forests make for plenty of hiking, too. And almost everything is dog friendly! (Natural Bridge and Whittleton Arch are not two).
It’s fine to take your dog for a walk on public land. Bandage the area if necessary after cleaning and be vigilant. And while we’re at it… leave no trace and pack your 10 essentials :)!

The Red River Gorge in Kentucky is located just hours from Lexington, Cincinnati, Columbus, Nashville, Knoxville and more. It is also the 2nd or 3rd top climbing spot in the entire United States. (Probably second only to California’s Yosemite National Park, it might even be California’s Joshua Tree.) It’s a climber’s mecca, but its great location and rugged (for rural Kentucky) weather also make it a great place for hiking, camping, and more. Outdoor forms of entertainment.
Swift Camp Creek Trail and Rock Bridge are two of my favorite hikes to take the dog.
The Swift Camp Creek Trail has several start and end locations in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Rock Bridge has a trail head near Swift Camp Creek if you want to turn the two into a full day hiking adventure.
For me these two walks are perfect for dogs. They are allowed on the roads and the ground supports them.
The Best Dog Friendly Hikes In All 50 States
Sky Bridge station is nearby for food, although I didn’t eat there. I mainly only visited the Red River Gorge in the off season. So their schedule is limited.

A Dog Friendly Wonderland: Ky’s Land Between The Lakes
The crowd and atmosphere is a bit more relaxed and older than Miguel’s. We were there with experienced climbers and a group from Quebec who had been climbing the Red River Gorge for several months.
The campground has tons of space and miles and miles of actual hiking trails. Mainly in the morning we walk another way, eat lunch and go back to walking.
